Revision as of 18:27, 7 September 2020

Gun is a Cave Story created by King 2.0 which is non-canonical in the Lunar Shadow universe and was inspired by the original game. Unlike Lunar Shadow or Solar Shadow, the mod was updated in parts so that it could be finished easier.

The actual mod itself started as a short mod that consisted of 4 levels and a boss fight with War Machine. After Gun v1 was released on March 4th 2020, it was updated to include more content.

Plot

(Gun v1): "Your mission, should you wish to engage, is to fight your way through 4 levels designed to train you for the battle against the War Machine. In each level, you must use your skills to fight enemies and navigate your way through harsh terrain. May you succeed in your mission."

(Gun v2): Awakened by an unknown master, Gunnoid-0's training involves making his way through various sectors and taking on various machines who'll put the player to the test to see if they're worthy of their master's plan.

Gun v3:

Reception

Gun v1 was released on March 14th 2020 and had a mixed reception. The main game's level design, graphics, weapons and story were praised though the mod was criticized for it's short length, using orange water as lava and some of it's design choices. The Taboo Zone in particular was reviled, enough so that it was redesigned for Gun v2.

Trivia

  • Lunar Shadow inspired another user King 2.0 to get into Cave Story modding, and create this mod. It also borrows a few things such as healing life capsules (called HP Upgrades in game), a wardrobe for alternate costumes (though King 2.0 sought to improve upon Lunar Shadow's convoluted wardrobe system) and a warp system (though Gun uses the teleporter instead of multiple doors).
  • Gunnoid-0's appearance is inspired by the Demi-fiend, the main protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei III: Lucifer's Call. This is most noticeable because Gunnoid-0 also had body markings that resemble tattoos.
  • The antagonist's name War Machine is a reference to the Nena song 99 Red Balloons, particularly the lyric "The war machine, it springs to life, Opens up one eager eye."
  • In addition, War Machine was originally going to be the final boss of Gun before it was expanded. The mod would have also been more atmospheric in that it would have built War Machine up to be a major threat.
  • The antagonist of Gun v2, the Diamond Dogs are a reference to the David Bowie song "Diamond Dogs" and not a reference to Metal Gear Solid V or My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
